Nigeria’s Economic Stability Must Now Deliver Jobs, Higher Incomes -Oyedele

By Sunday Etuka

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Prof. Taiwo Oyedele, has told an international audience in London that macroeconomic stability is only the starting point, and that the true measure of reform is whether ordinary citizens feel the benefit in their daily lives.

Speaking at Chatham House, Oyedele outlined the country’s reform journey and what it means for everyday Nigerians.

He said inflation has fallen to 14.63%, external reserves have reached US$55 billion, and economic growth is projected at 4.3% in 2026, figures he described as evidence of an economy that is increasingly stable and resilient.

The minister cautioned, however, that stability should not be mistaken for the end goal.

According to him, the real test is whether families can afford food, businesses can thrive, young people can find decent jobs, and citizens can access quality healthcare, education and economic opportunities.

He said the government’s next task is to reform credibility into investment, investment into jobs, and growth into incomes that rise faster than prices.

Oyedele also spoke directly to investors, noting that capital has no citizenship and does not respond to speeches or slogans.

In his words, it moves toward credible, consistent and transparent policies, goes where opportunities exist, and stays where it is treated fairly.

He stressed that the government’s responsibility is to make Nigeria that destination and to keep it that way.
