NISO Alerts On Planned Power Outage In Kano, Jigawa, Katsina

By Sunday Etuka

Residents of Kano, Jigawa and Katsina States should brace for a temporary disruption to their electricity supply this weekend, as the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has announced a planned power outage scheduled for Sunday, June 28, 2026.

The outage, which will run from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., is necessitated to facilitate essential maintenance works at the 330kV Kumbotso Substation to be carried out by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

In a statement issued on Friday, NISO described the exercise as a critical investment in Nigeria’s power infrastructure, saying the upgrade would strengthen the national grid and expand the transmission capacity of the network serving the three states.

“The upgrade is a critical investment that would strengthen the national grid and enhance the transmission capacity of the network, thereby improving electricity supply to customers in the region and the overall resilience of Nigeria’s power system,” the statement read.

NISO assured stakeholders that the interruption is temporary and that the works are ultimately aimed at delivering more reliable electricity to consumers across the region.

The announcement comes amid broader efforts by authorities to improve the stability and reach of the national grid, which has long struggled with generation, transmission and distribution challenges.

Residents and businesses in the three states are advised to make necessary arrangements ahead of the four-hour window and are encouraged to store water, charge devices, and plan around the disruption.

NISO expressed regret over any inconvenience the outage may cause, while appealing for patience, understanding and cooperation of the public.
