NNPC Ltd Welcomes $800m Ima Gas Final Investment Decision

By Sunday Etuka

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has welcomed the $800 million Final Investment Decision (FID) reached on the Ima Gas Project, calling it a landmark development that underscores the growing viability of Nigeria’s upstream gas sector.

Andy Odeh, Chief Corporate Communications Officer, NNPC Limited, disclosed in a statement on Friday that the project, located offshore in Oil Mining Leases (OMLs) 112 and 117, is being developed by AMNI International Petroleum Development Company in partnership with TotalEnergies.

At peak production, it is expected to deliver about 300 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, output that will supply critical feedgas to Nigeria LNG Limited in support of the company’s Train 7 expansion.

The Train 7 project will raise capacity at the Bonny Island LNG plant from 22 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) to 30 Mtpa, positioning Nigeria to significantly boost its liquefied natural gas export capacity.

NNPC Ltd noted that the FID was made possible by the Presidential Directives of 2024, which introduced fiscal incentives for non-associated gas projects, streamlined contracting processes and lowered development costs across the sector.

With Ima now reaching FID, it becomes the fourth major gas project to attain this milestone under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, following Iseni, Ubeta and HI.

Speaking on the development, Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, described the FID as “a decisive vote of confidence in Nigeria’s gas sector and in the bold reforms” that have delivered competitive terms and a more predictable investment climate for operators.

NNPC Ltd also commended the collaboration between AMNI, TotalEnergies and Nigeria’s financial sector in bringing the project to this stage, noting that the partnership model combining an indigenous operator, an international partner and domestic capital offers a template that could guide future gas developments in the country.

The national oil company reaffirmed its commitment to working with government, regulators and industry partners to sustain the current investment momentum and to deploy Nigeria’s gas resources toward industrialisation, job creation and long-term national prosperity.
