The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has congratulated Daily Times Nigeria on its centenary celebration, using the occasion to call on journalists and media organisations across the country to reaffirm their commitment to ethical journalism and innovation.
Chairman, NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike made the call in a statement issued to mark the 100th anniversary of one of Nigeria’s oldest newspapers.
“One hundred years is not just a number; it is a testimony to resilience, relevance and service to the Nigerian nation and to the media profession,” Ike said, describing the milestone as a testament to the courage and professionalism of successive generations of journalists who kept the institution alive through different eras.
She said the Daily Times had played a historic role in shaping public opinion, promoting democratic values and strengthening journalism practice in Nigeria, and that its legacy remains a major reference point in the history of the Nigerian press.
While celebrating the achievement, Ike framed the centenary as more than a commemoration, calling it a moment of reckoning for the journalism profession.
“For us in the NUJ, this celebration is also a call to reflection. It reminds us of the responsibility we bear as journalists to uphold truth, fairness, accuracy and ethical conduct in our work,” she said.
The Chairman stressed that credible journalism has grown even more essential at a time when the media industry is being reshaped by technological change and the rising influence of digital platforms.
She urged media organisatioms to embrace innovation without sacrificing professional standards.
“We urge the organisation to use this centenary not only to celebrate its glorious past, but also to renew its commitment to excellence, innovation and the highest standards of journalism,” she said.
Ike commended Daily Times for opening its centenary activities with a press conference, describing the media as a critical instrument for public enlightenment and national development.
She called on the newspaper to use the celebration to chart a clear path for its next century.
The NUJ chairman concluded by wishing the organisation greater success, renewed vision and lasting impact as it begins its second century of operation.
