POWA President Surprises Abuja Barracks With Welfare Outreach

By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja

The National President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Disu, has conducted surprise welfare visits to police barracks in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), providing immediate support to widows, women traders and families of serving officers ahead of the 2026 POWA National Convention.

Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Aniete Iniedu, said on Thursday that the two-day outreach, held on July 14 and 15, covered Area C Police Barracks, Nyanya, and the 44 Police Mobile Force (PMF) Barracks, Kuje.

Moving through the Area C Barracks market without prior notice, Mrs. Disu and members of her management team interacted with women traders, widows and officers’ spouses, observing sparsely stocked shops and listening to their accounts of the economic hardships facing police families.

The visit resulted in immediate assistance, including cash grants, business starter packs and food items to help beneficiaries restock their businesses and improve household livelihoods. Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the timely intervention.

Mrs. Disu said the visits were deliberately unannounced to give POWA a true picture of the realities confronting police families, stressing that firsthand assessment would enable the association to design interventions that directly address their needs.

She noted that the outreach was carried out under the POWA CARES Initiative, which focuses on healthcare, welfare and economic empowerment for police families in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

The outreach also serves as a prelude to the POWA National Convention, scheduled for July 16–18, 2026, with the theme: “The Resilient Woman: Navigating Life’s Challenges with Strength, Purpose and Grace.” The convention will focus on healthcare, mental wellness, economic empowerment and family support systems.

The Nigeria Police Force said it remains committed to providing practical, dignity-preserving support to widows of fallen officers and the families of serving personnel.
