
The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the appointment of a substantive Deputy Inspector General of Police representing the South West zone, in the person of AIG Banji Lawal.
The Commission’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, made this announcement in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja.
Lawal, who until his new appointment was the Assistant Inspector General in charge of Border Patrol at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, succeeded DIG Sylvester Alabi, who was the DIG in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, following his retirement on December 31, 2024.
According to the Commissions spokesperson, Lawal underwent written and oral examinations, during which he particularly praised the Community Policing programme of the Nigeria Police Force, which he described as successful and impactful.
DIG Lawal has an extensive career in the Nigeria Police Force, having served as the former Commandant of the Police Training College in Ikeja, Lagos; Assistant Commissioner of Operations in Ekiti, Abia, and Edo States; Area Commander in Uyo; Deputy Commissioner of Operations in Nasarawa and Akwa Ibom States; and Deputy Commissioner of Finance and Administration at the ICT Force Headquarters in Abuja.
He has also served as Deputy Commissioner and Deputy Registrar at the Central Criminal Registry (CCR), Force Headquarters Annex, Alagbon Close, Ikoyi; DCP Finance and Administration in Benue State; Deputy Commandant of the Police Academy in Wudil, Kano; and CP General Investigation at the Force CID.
The Commission’s Chairman Hashimu Argungu, congratulated Lawal on his promotion and urged him to make himself an indispensable member of the Police Management Team.
