Former Daily Times Managing Director and veteran diplomat, Ambassador Patrick Dele Cole, has died at the age of 86, and President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to him as a distinguished public servant who gave his life to national service.
In a statement on Saturday, the President said he received the news of the passing with profound sadness. He described Cole as a diplomat, journalist, politician and public servant who brought distinction to every field he worked in.
Tinubu said Cole’s career reflected the enduring value of dialogue, tact, mutual respect and the pursuit of shared interests in advancing national development and international cooperation.
The President singled out the late ambassador’s contributions to Nigeria’s media landscape as particularly notable.
As Managing Director of the Daily Times, he said, Cole upheld the vital role of the press in holding public officials accountable, speaking truth to power and strengthening democratic governance.
He added that Cole’s legacy in journalism and public life remains an enduring part of the national story.
According to Tinubu, Cole witnessed defining moments in Nigeria’s history and contributed to the nation’s development through his work in the media, diplomacy and public service.
He said his life stands as a testament to the value of experience, principled engagement and commitment to the public good.
The President extended his condolences to Cole’s family, friends, professional associates and all whose lives he touched.
He prayed that memories of the late ambassador’s remarkable life would bring them comfort and strength at this difficult time.
“May Almighty God grant Ambassador Cole eternal rest and give his family and all who mourn him the fortitude to bear this profound loss,” Tinubu said.
