President Bola Tinubu on Monday declared open the sixth Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers (CARSPO 2026) in Owerri, Imo State, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting the Nigeria Police Force in securing the 2027 General Elections.
Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, Tinubu described the conference, themed “Developing a Nigeria Police Roadmap for Effective Management of Security During Elections,” as timely, stressing the need for professionalism, neutrality, intelligence-led operations and effective inter-agency collaboration.
TheFact Daily notes that the retreat comes as the Police intensify preparations for the 2027 polls, with the Force seeking to strengthen election security through improved intelligence gathering, training, technology and community engagement.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, unveiled a six-pillar framework for election security, focusing on intelligence and early warning systems, training and preparedness, inter-agency coordination, technology-driven operations, community partnerships and absolute neutrality.
Disu said Commissioners of Police had been directed to identify electoral flashpoints and emerging threats in their commands, while announcing that the Force would launch a public election complaints line on October 12, 2026, ahead of the polls.
The IGP also warned against political violence, voter intimidation, vote-buying and other electoral offences, stressing that officers found colluding with political actors or abusing their powers would face sanctions.
