Troops Recover AK-47s, Other Weapons In Plateau

By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja

Troops of the Nigerian Army, operating under Sector 8 of Operation ENDURING PEACE, have recovered AK-47 rifles and other weapons during a raid on a suspected arms cache in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The NA disclosed on Thursday that the operation followed credible intelligence received on August 19, 2026, about a planned attack on Mwar Community in Chakfem Kingdom by suspected bandit militias.

The Army said the planned attack was believed to be linked to the alleged rustling of an unconfirmed number of cattle by some youths from the community.

Troops subsequently launched a fighting patrol and raid on suspected locations, deploying drones and other surveillance assets to search surrounding settlements and bush areas for the missing cattle.

Although the cattle were not found, intelligence identified Pantong Stanley and other youths as suspected perpetrators. A snap raid on Stanley’s residence, while he was away, led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle, one locally fabricated AK-47, one locally fabricated revolver rifle, two Dane guns and 15 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition.

The Army said troops, in collaboration with the Police and other security agencies, were conducting targeted searches around the areas linked to other suspects to recover the missing cattle, locate additional arms caches and apprehend those responsible.

Operation ENDURING PEACE urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information on suspicious activities to security agencies.

The Army reaffirmed its commitment to curbing the proliferation of illegal arms, protecting vulnerable communities and maintaining peace and security across Plateau State and the North-Central region.
