Power they say corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. That’s the story of Speaker Elvert Ayambem who has allowed power to get into his head and now arrogates the status of god to himself.
Picked by former Governor Ben Ayade as a house agent and made a member of the House of Assembly in 2019 and was given a return ticket in 2023. But, due to his egoism he lost not just his polling unit, but his entire ward of Nde but God saved him through Hon. Kingsley Egumi who delivered his Abanyom Ward totally to make him win.
On his return to the house even when there was an arrangement that Hon. Hilary Bisong will be Speaker, Senator Ndoma Egba and other Ikom leaders appealed to Governor Bassey Otu, and stakeholders to allow Ikom get the position because Boki already has a House of Representatives member.
When Ayambem was impeached due to his high handedness, financial recklessness and incompetence, it was the same Senator Ndoma Egba who came up to rescue him by still appealing to the party to allow him be, all in the interest of Ikom.
Today, Speaker Ayambem is fighting former Governor Ben Ayade, and showing gross ingratitude to a man who made him. He is also fighting Hon. Egumi the immediate past Chairman of Ikom who was instrumental to his victory.
He has turned himself into a Demi -god and has vowed he will install a Chairman and all the Councillors in Ikom LGA without recourse to anybody , including even Senator Ndoma Egba, and the State Deputy Chairman who is from Ikom and that , the next Chairman of Ikom must be a member of his cult group.
In cohort with Eka Williams, Commissioner for Power, he has written a list that has One Ndifon Ojogu a member of his cult group and junior brother to the State Deputy Chairman of APC, Hon. Ekum Ekok Ojogu as Chairman and eleven other names as councilors.
The list according to sources will be given to the Governor who will then send it to the Party for adoption. This was done without recourse to the leadership of Ikom that has National figures like Senator Ndoma Egba, and Barr Mary Ekpere.
One begins to wonder that with Ayambem power drunk attitude ,and disrespect for those who had helped him before now, what’s would be the fate of Governor Bassey Otu when he must have completed his tenure, and maybe power falls into the hands of Ayambem in future.
It is this same attitude of betrayal, and wicked greed that made his colleagues to impeach him, but was lucky to be rescued by Governor Bassey Otu following the intervention on his behalf by notable politicians like Senator Victor Ndoma Egba.
From Ayambem’s antecedents, no one needs a sound prophet to predict accurately that he will backstab Governor Bassey Otu in future. If Ayambem can backstab and betray Ben Ayade who picked him from the streets, where like a vulture , he was scavenging for survival, is it Governor Bassey Otu that he will not betray in future?
He must be stopped now before it swallows us all, as even the Governor Bassey Otu and his Chief of Staff Hon. Emmanuel Ironbark, who have also helped him tremendously, won’t be safe , if it is allowed to grow bigger than its real size.
