Operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested 30 suspected internet fraudsters during a sting operation at two buildings in the Agbede Community, Ilorin, Kwara State.
The anti-graft agency’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewole, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, said the operation, carried out on Wednesday, 26th also led to the recovery of eight vehicles suspected to be proceeds of crime, alongside mobile phones and laptops. Six of those arrested were identified as students of Kwara State Polytechnic, with preliminary profiling indicating their active involvement in internet fraud.
TheFact Daily reports that the arrests come amid heightened sensitivity around anti-cybercrime operations in Ilorin, where sporadic student protests have surfaced in recent times, often driven by perceptions of harassment or wrongful targeting during enforcement actions. Such demonstrations have, in some instances, been fueled by viral videos and unverified claims on social media linking law enforcement activities to academic institutions.
However, the EFCC maintained that the operation had no connection whatsoever with the Polytechnic, stressing that its operatives neither entered the school premises nor disrupted any academic activity. The Commission described as “contrived” and misleading any video or claim suggesting that the raid triggered student protests.
Reaffirming its stance, the EFCC said it remains committed to professionalism and integrity, urging the public to utilise existing channels to report any misconduct by its personnel while continuing its mandate in the interest of Nigerians.
