Former Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr. Sam Amadi has defended the former governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi’s pledge to serve for only a single term if elected President.
Amadi, who is also a leading Igbo political figure, declared in a post on his X handle on Thursday that Obi’s position was both democratically sound and politically honest.
While stating that more could be accomplished in one term, Amadi argued that former President Goodluck Jonathen achieved more in his one term in office than late President Muhammadu Buhari did in eight years.
“Some say “oh you cannot change Nigeria in four years”. By the same breath, you cannot change Nigeria in eight years. So, you should remain beyond eight years? Did OBJ change Nigeria in eight years? Did Buhari change Nigeria in eight years? Actually, Buhari further endangered Nigeria in eight years. GEJ accomplished more in one term than Buhari in eight years.
“Again, some say “Peter is cheating Igbos who deserve eight years”. Well, in normal times, yes we need eight years. But what did eight years buy for Katsina and Northwest? What exactly? Longevity is not the point. Intensity is.
“I am part of Igbo leadership. Our people want the presidency more for its psychological value. We are equal citizens. One term achieves that. The rest is for Nigeria. Real development in the southeast rests on governors who can deliver transformation. That is why I will run for governor late in 2027,” he said.
Dismissing naysayers who have questioned the sincerity or wisdom of Obi’s one-term commitment, Amadi argued that four years is enough for any focus President to deliver on electoral promises.
“You are only elected for a four-year single term. In a real democracy, there is no guarantee you would be reelected. Four years should be enough to deliver what you promised the nation,” he said.
