Former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to resign, citing monumental failures in governance across electricity supply, security, infrastructure and the economy.
Obi, in a statement posted on his X handle on Monday, framed his call within a broader reflection on political accountability, citing example of the British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s announced resignation amid public frustration over a stagnant economy and broken campaign promises.
“I join Nigerians of goodwill in calling for the resignation of the President over monumental failure in governance,” he said. “Such a gesture would help enthrone a political culture rooted in accountability and responsibility, rather than further entrenching impunity.”
The former governor pointed to Tinubu’s own record of demanding accountability from predecessors as the basis for his call. He recalled that before 2015, Tinubu, then a prominent opposition figure, had on several occasions called for the resignation of former President Goodluck Jonathan over economic hardship and insecurity, including a specific demand following the abductions of schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno State.
Obi also cited the campaign promises made by Tinubu ahead of the 2023 general election, including a pledge to improve electricity supply, fight corruption and raise the welfare of Nigerians, along with a public challenge to voters not to return him for a second term if he failed to deliver on those promises.
“At present, however, these conditions have worsened,” Obi said. “Electricity supply remains unreliable, insecurity has intensified in many areas, including kidnappings, and economic hardship has deepened rather than eased.”
He argued that a resignation under such circumstances would serve a purpose beyond the immediate political moment, helping to establish a norm in which public office is treated as a trust rather than an entitlement and in which leadership failure carries consequences.
“Only by ending the culture of impunity can we secure a better future for the society our children will inherit,” Obi said.
