NAAPE To Insure Pilots Against Licence Loss

By Stella Enenche, Abuja

The National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) has commenced plans to introduce a Loss of Licence Insurance Scheme aimed at protecting pilots and licensed aircraft engineers from the financial hardship that may arise if they lose their professional licences.

The proposed scheme was the subject of discussions during a strategic meeting between NAAPE’s National Executive Council and representatives of ETG and Epicure Insurance Brokers in Lagos.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, NAAPE’s spokesperson, Engr. Blessing Ahmadu, said the meeting featured a presentation on the proposed insurance package, including its coverage, eligibility criteria, underwriting capacity, claims administration process and examples of how similar schemes operate in other countries.

Speaking during the engagement, NAAPE National President, Captain Bunmi Gindeh, said the association was broadening its welfare agenda beyond negotiating improved salaries and conditions of service.

“A professional licence represents years of training, experience and sacrifice for pilots and aircraft engineers. It is therefore important to provide financial protection when unforeseen medical conditions or other qualifying circumstances prevent members from continuing their careers,” Gindeh said.

He added that the association would continue to collaborate with industry stakeholders to develop initiatives that enhance members’ welfare while promoting professionalism, aviation safety and the sustainable growth of Nigeria’s aviation industry.

According to the statement, the meeting also explored wider insurance and risk management solutions tailored to the changing needs of aviation professionals, with a view to strengthening their financial security and career resilience.

Chief Executive Officer of Epicure Insurance Brokers, Mrs. Oyinpreye Aigbogun, commended NAAPE for prioritising members’ welfare through specialised insurance products.

She said the proposed Loss of Licence Insurance would help cushion the financial impact on pilots, aircraft engineers and other aviation professionals whose careers are interrupted following the loss of their licences.

Both organisations agreed to sustain consultations aimed at making specialised insurance solutions more accessible to aviation professionals across Nigeria.
