The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) have agreed to deepen collaboration on climate services, data management, research and early warning systems as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s response to climate change.
The renewed partnership was the outcome of a courtesy visit by the Director-General of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, to the Director-General of the NCCC Secretariat, Dr. Tenioye Majekodunmi, on Tuesday in Abuja.
Anosike underscored NiMet’s strategic role as the custodian of Nigeria’s long-term meteorological records, stressing that the agency provides the baseline atmospheric data required for climate trend analysis, climate risk assessment and the development of reliable climate projections.
He called for closer collaboration between the two institutions in developing climate projections, strengthening early warning systems, harmonising climate data and undertaking joint research to support evidence-based policymaking.
According to him, “Enhanced collaboration will provide policymakers with localized, science-based information needed to implement effective climate adaptation and mitigation strategies while improving the downscaling of global climate projections into practical advisories for communities and climate-sensitive sectors.”
Anosike also highlighted the importance of quality meteorological and climate data in unlocking international climate finance, noting that both agencies could jointly pursue funding opportunities to strengthen climate resilience, early warning systems and critical climate infrastructure.
He said such collaboration would enhance Nigeria’s capacity to respond effectively to the growing impacts of climate change.
Responding, the Director-General of the NCCC Secretariat, Dr. Tenioye Majekodunmi, welcomed the NiMet delegation and commended the agency for its contributions to weather forecasting and climate services across the country.
Majekodunmi expressed the Council’s commitment to strengthening institutional ties with NiMet, saying closer cooperation would support national efforts to build climate resilience and improve climate governance.
Both organisations agreed to formalise their partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) covering climate services, climate data management, climate research, early warning systems, capacity development and other areas of mutual interest.
