The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued two babies abandoned in separate incidents in Kurudu and Gwagwalada areas of Abuja.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, saying the babies were rescued after residents alerted the police.
The first incident occurred on Wednesday, September 2, when a resident, Innocent, found a baby boy wrapped in cloth and abandoned in a carton box around Obodo Street, Kurudu.
Police officers from Kurudu Division and personnel of the Juveniles and Women Care Department rescued the child and took him to a nearby hospital, where he was found to be in stable condition. He was subsequently handed over to the Social Welfare Department for further care.
In the second incident, another resident, Ibrahim, heard a baby crying outside his gate in Gwagwalada at about 9:40pm and, with the help of community members, rescued the baby girl and reported the matter to the police.
She was taken to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for medical examination and treatment pending her transfer to the Social Welfare Department.
The command said investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the abandonments and identify the children’s mothers or relatives.
It commended the residents for their prompt intervention and appealed to anyone with useful information to report to the nearest police station.
