Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived back in Nigeria following a series of high level engagements on trade, investment and technology at the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, India, where he represented President Bola Tinubu.
His Senior Special Assistant on Media & Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, who announced his arrival in a statement on Tuesday, said throughout the visit, Shettima took part in the summit’s high level sessions and held bilateral talks geared towards advancing Nigeria’s economic and diplomatic interests.
Among his key engagements, according to Nkwocha, was a meeting with Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, during which both sides discussed renewed crude oil trade, investment, pharmaceuticals, defence, digital technology, fintech, renewable energy and other strategic sectors.
The statement said Shettima also held talks with the Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to multilateralism and a more inclusive global economic order.
It said it the summit, the Vice President delivered President Tinubu’s message calling for reforms of global governance and financial institutions, while presenting Nigeria as a gateway to Africa’s expanding market under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
The statement said Nigeria also used the summit to strengthen ties with BRICS member and partner countries in agriculture, artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, manufacturing, healthcare, energy and human capital development.
