The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) said it has completed the concrete works on the inbound and outbound landside bridges of Terminal 1 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, with the facilities expected to become operational in December 2026.
FAAN marked the milestone on Tuesday with the final pouring of concrete on the two bridges, effectively linking the structures from their starting points to their endpoints.
TheFact Daily gathered that the development was part of ongoing rehabilitation and modernisation of Terminal 1, aimed at upgrading Nigeria’s major international gateway and improving the experience of passengers using the facility.
Speaking during the event, FAAN Managing Directo, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, described the completion of the concrete works as another major step in moving the project “from plans to visible delivery.”
Kuku said the transformation of Terminal 1 was becoming increasingly tangible to Nigerians and international travellers, while commending the Federal Government for its support for the project.
She expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, for their leadership, support and commitment to the project.
The FAAN boss also acknowledged the contributions of the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), project consultant ARUP, FAAN’s technical teams and other stakeholders involved in the rehabilitation works.
She said the milestone provided visible evidence of the progress being made in the modernisation of the airport terminal.
However, FAAN clarified that the completion of the concrete works does not mean that the bridges would immediately be opened to passengers.
According to the authority, the newly poured concrete must undergo the required curing period, after which lighting and other finishing works would be carried out.
The landside bridges are expected to become operational in December 2026, alongside the anticipated completion of the façade and other exterior works of Terminal 1.
FAAN said the project formed part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to upgrade airport infrastructure, enhance passenger experience and position Nigerian airports to meet the demands of a modern aviation environment.
