The Chairman of West African Power Pool (WAPP) Executive Board, Engr. Sule Abdulaziz has been unanimously re-elected for another three-year tenure.
Abdulaziz’s re-election was confirmed during the 68th Meeting of the Executive Board held in Lome on October 8 and 9, 2026, according to a statement made available by TCN on Sunday in Abuja.
Speaking at the meeting, he thanked members for the confidence reposed in him and promised to continue working with the team to advance WAPP cause, calling on member utilities to strengthen collective responsibility in building a more viable regional electricity market.
He recalled that the 67th Meeting approved principles for progressive establishment of the Independent System and Market Operator while preserving operational continuity through the transitional role of WAPP Information and Coordination Centre, saying the task before board is to ensure decisions are implemented within sound legal, institutional and financial framework.
The Chairman stressed that statutory contributions remain the foundation of WAPP autonomy and ability to act, urging members to honour financial obligations while the Secretariat continues cost reduction efforts without weakening critical functions.
He highlighted network synchronisation and launch of regional electricity market as key technical issues, describing synchronisation as a major achievement that must be supported by coordinated operation, security arrangements and market readiness, noting regional market will only fulfil promise if it rests on clearly understood rules, reliable data, credible financial mechanisms and independent governance.
Earlier, Secretary General and Secretary of Executive Board, Mr Abdoulaye Dia said since 67th session, WAPP has continued to implement guidelines on institutional strengthening and progressive operationalisation of ISMO, with functional and accounting unbundling and orderly transition allowing ICC to ensure continuity during Phase 2 of Regional Electricity Market.
Dia said progress and increased visibility earned the institution new partnerships, reaffirming Secretariat commitment to building integrated, reliable and competitive regional electricity systems ahead of launch of the second phase early next year.
He stressed the need for member utilities to settle outstanding contributions, noting regular funding, rigorous management and collective discipline are critical to credibility and service delivery.
The Board also discussed restructuring study on operationalisation of ISMO in line with best practice to mitigate political interference as market evolves, and adopted Charter of Forum for Women in Energy in West Africa and Memorandum of Understanding with Millennium Challenge Account Cote d’Ivoire.
The meeting welcomed new representatives including Mr Lawrent Tossou, Managing Director of Societe Beninoise d’Energie Electrique representing Benin, Mr Amidou Traore, Director General of CI-ENERGIES, and Mr Julien Sagna representing Societe de Gestion de l’Energie de Manantali.
The Board reviewed membership applications from Konexa of Nigeria, SOGESART of Senegal, SOGEOH and HOLDEN Niger SARL IPP from Niger, to be ratified at the General Assembly before end of year.
