The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Ag. AIG, Usman Baba, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved new security measures for the South East and South-South geo-political zones.
Baba, who disclosed this on Tuesday, after a meeting of the National Security Council presided over by Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said that the measures were customised specially to address the security challenges being witnessed in the two geo-political zones.
TheFact Nigeria has been tracking the spate of unprovoked attacks by armed hoodlums, mostly suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, on police formations across the Southeast and South-South region.
It is also noted that the governors of the Southeast, Southwest, and South-South regions, after a meeting held in Asaba, the Delta State capital, issued a comminique in which one of the points of agreement was for the ‘evolution of state police’.
The IGP was joined at the briefing by the National Security Adviser, NSA, Major General Babagana Monguno (retd.) and the Chief of Defence Staff, CDS Gen. Lucky Irabor.
The police boss however did not disclose details of the new tactics to be employed.
“We have some measures which we have outlined and have been approved by the Council and we will see how we can change the narrative within the quickest possible means to restore law and order and restore peace in that area.
“We solicit the support of all law-abiding citizens to work with us to identify and deal with the situation. That is that. I may not go into the details of how we will do that”, the police chief said.
On his part, Monguno, who noted that the frequency of security meetings with the President highlighted the need to address the growing insecurity in the country, said the President has issued marching orders to deal with the emerging challenges head-on.
