COAS Tasks Army RSMs On Discipline, Mentorship

By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has charged Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSMs) of the Nigerian Army to strengthen discipline, mentorship and regimentation to support the Service’s expansion and modernisation drive.

Shaibu gave the charge on Friday, November 6, 2026, at the closing ceremony of the Second Regimental Sergeant Majors’ Convention in Benin City, Edo State, after a five-day gathering of RSMs from across Army formations and representatives of sister Services and security agencies.

He described RSMs as custodians of the Army’s professional values and fighting spirit, urging them to address misconduct, including drug abuse, gambling, absenteeism and misuse of social media, which undermine military discipline and operational effectiveness.

The Army Chief particularly commended a presentation by the Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), on combating drug abuse.

Earlier, during a visit to Headquarters 4 Brigade, Shaibu commended troops for maintaining security in their area of responsibility and directed them to protect lives and property while dealing decisively with criminal elements.

He stressed that military operations must remain professional and within the law, particularly in protecting civilians, adding that discipline and exemplary conduct were essential to building a combat-ready and resilient Army.
