The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has appealed to motorists and airport users for understanding following traffic congestion that trailed the full rollout of its Go-Cashless Programme at the access gates of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
This was contained in a post shared on FAAN’s official X handle on Sunday.
TheFactDaily noted that the cashless system, came into following Federal Government’s directive on electronic transactions. The new policy is designed to eliminate cash payments at airport toll gates and promote seamless access control.
However, operations on the first day were slowed by a rush of motorists who sought to obtain their Go-Cashless cards at the airport gates, leading to temporary gridlock and delays.
FAAN acknowledged the build-up, explaining that despite extensive publicity and advance notices issued ahead of the commencement date, many users deferred registration until the programme’s launch.
The Authority said it anticipated minor adjustment challenges typical of major system transitions but emphasised that early registration had been encouraged to prevent congestion.
To ease pressure on the access roads, FAAN said it deployed additional personnel, expanded on-site registration points to speed up card issuance, and intensified traffic management coordination around the toll plazas.
The agency assured airport users that efforts are ongoing to stabilise the process and restore smooth traffic flow, while reiterating the long term benefits of the initiative, including faster processing time, improved transparency, reduced cash handling risks and enhanced operational efficiency.
FAAN urged motorists yet to obtain their cards to utilise the expanded registration support and plan ahead for subsequent visits to avoid delays.
It reaffirmed its commitment to providing safe, efficient and globally competitive airport services.
