Petrol Import Rises In May Despite Increased Domestic Supply -NMDPRA

Oil marketers imported about 5.9million litres per day of petrol in May 2026, up from 3.7 million l/d imported in April, even as supply to the domestic market from the Dangote Refinery also increased during the month, according to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

The NMDPRA Factsheet released on Thursday showed that total petrol supply to the domestic market rose from 44.4million l/d in April to 47.4 million l/d in May. Of this volume, the Dangote Refinery supplied 41.5million l/d to the domestic market out of its total production of 44.7 million l/d.

Despite the higher supply, overall, petrol consumption in the country declined to 46.3million l/d in May from the 51.1million l/d 2026 in April.

The NMDPRA Factsheet revealed that the Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), popularly known as diesel, increased from 10.2million l/d in April 2026 to 18.8million l/d in May 2026.

Domestic supply increased from 8.5million l/d in April 2026 to 18.8million l/d in May 2026, with zero imports.

Overall, AGO consumption in the country declined to 16.0 million l/d in May 2026, from the 17.3million consumed in April 2026.

The report showed that the supply of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG), also known as cooking gas, was 4.1kt/d in May 2026, down from the 4.5kt/d supplied in the month of April 2026.

Overall, the LGP consumption in the country dropped to 4.5 kt/d in May 2026, from the 4.8kt/d consumed in April 2026.
