Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has become the first club in seven years to retain the UEFA Champions League Title, defeating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties after a tense 1-1 draw in the final at Budapest’s Puskás Aréna on Saturday.
The victory makes Luis Enrique’s side the first team to successfully defend the European crown since Real Madrid achieved the same feat in 2018, cementing PSG’s status as the continent’s dominant footballing force and making a historic milestone for French football.
Arsenal made a blistering start when Kai Havertz’s struck in the sixth minute to give Mikel Arteta’s side the lead, but PSG levelled through
Ousmane Dembélé’s penalty on 65 minutes. Neither side could find a winner in the extra time, setting a stage for a dramatic shootout.
In the shootout, it was Arsenal’s defender Gabriel who missed the decisive kick, to hand PSG the trophy. The result was a painful one for the Gunners, who had reached their first Champions League final in two decades.
The triumph drew widespread praise for PSG’s squad depth and mental resilience, qualities that have defined their run to back-to-back European titles under Luis Enrique.
For Arsenal and Arteta, however, attention now turns to regrouping and mounting a fresh challenge in the season ahead.
