Police Thwart Attempted Suicide In Gombe

By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja

A timely intervention by police operatives has foiled an attempted suicide in Gombe state.

The state Command’s spokesperson, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, giving details of police operations in the state.

According to him, the Command on Saturday, 8 March, received a distress call through its Control Room regarding an unidentified individual who had climbed up an MTN mast at Maimala Buni Street in Gombe LGA, and refused to get down.

Upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer of Pantami Division swiftly mobilized officers to the scene, where upon inquiry, the individual, later identified as Mohammed Bello, aged 27, claimed he was being hunted by security agencies over outstanding debts reported by two creditors which he had failed to pay and expressed his preference to end his life rather than face the situation.

During the intervention, Katukan Gombe, a respected community leader, persuaded Bello to climb down, assuring him that the debts would be settled. Following this reassurance, Bello complied and safely descended from the mast. He was taken into police custody, where his statement was recorded under caution.

“The Command urges the public to seek lawful and constructive solutions to financial challenges and reminds individuals that help is always available”, Abdullahi stated.
