Parts of Port Harcourt and its environs have been without bulk electricity supply since Monday after members of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) shut down a key transmission line over a dispute with the management of Afam IV Power Station, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has disclosed.
In a statement on Tuesday, TCN said the disruption began on Monday, September 28, 2026, when NUEE members in Rivers State opened the Afam to Alaoji 330kV Transmission Line 2 at the Alaoji 330kV Transmission Substation.
The company linked the action to an ongoing labour dispute between the union and the management of Afam IV Gas Power Station.
TCN explained that the shutdown caused the 150MVA 330/132kV inter-bus transformer at Afam IV to trip, cutting bulk electricity transmission to parts of the city and surrounding areas.
The affected facilities include the Port Harcourt Town 132kV Transmission Substation and the Elelenwo 132kV Transmission Substation. The 60MVA 132/33kV transformer at the Port Harcourt Mains 132kV Transmission Substation was also affected.
The company said it is working with relevant stakeholders, including the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), to bring the affected facilities back online. It added that restoration will happen as soon as conditions allow safe reconnection.
TCN apologised to electricity consumers in the affected areas for the inconvenience and promised to keep the public updated as the situation develops.
