The entire nation has been thrown into darkness following the collapse of the national grid, the fourth recorded since the beginning of this year.
Abuja Electricity Distribution Company Plc (AEDC) in a Public Notice issued late on Monday said, the power outage being experienced was due to a system failure from the national grid at 6:58pm affecting the power supply to it franchise area.
It however, assured that it was working with the relevant stakeholders to restore the power as soon as the grid is stabilized.
The Public Notice read thus: “Dear Valued Customer, Please be informed that the power outage being experienced is due to a system failure from the national grid at 6:58pm today, affecting the power supply to our franchise areas. Rest assured, we are working with the relevant stakeholders to restore power as soon as the grid is stabilized. Thank you for your understanding.”
On it part, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc (EEDC) informed her esteemed customers of a general system collapse that occurred at 18:48 hours on Monday, 14th October, 2024.
In a statement signed by the Head of Corporate Communications, EEDC, Emeka Edeh, the company said, the grid collapse has it resulted in the loss of supply currently being experienced across EEDC network.
“Consequently, due to this development, all our interface TCN stations are out of supply, and we are unable to provide services to our customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States.
“We are on standby awaiting detailed information of the collapse and restoration of supply from the National Control Centre (NCC), Osogbo,” the statement said.
Last month, the federal government launched a of the state-of-the-art Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system designed to automate and manage the power grid more effectively.
The SCADA system when fully operational would enhance grid stability, reduce power outages, and improve energy efficiency.
As of May this year, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced that it recorded twenty (20) grid disturbances/system collapses in five (5) years due to the non-availability of functional SCADA systems.
Giving the breakdown, TCN said, between 2020 and May this year, it recorded fourteen total and six partial grid disturbances totalling twenty (20), which it said was better than the sixty-four total and twenty-one partial grid disturbances, totalling eighty-five (85) recorded between 2015 and 2019.
