Electricity: NERC Moves To Bridge Metering Gap, Engages Stakeholders

By Sunday Etuka

In a move aimed at closing the existing metering gap in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has engaged stakeholders drawn from across the nation’s electricity value chain.

At a NESI Metering Stakeholders’ Meeting held recently in Lagos, NERC emphasised the need for stronger coordination amongst the stakeholders to accelerate meter installations and reduce Nigeria’s metering gap.

The meeting was part of broader efforts to improve metering coverage, transparency, and efficiency in Nigeria’s electricity market.

The power regulator underscored the need for a shift in focus from financing metering projects to better coordination amongst stakeholders.

The meeting also discussed the importance of coordinating the four metering programmes currently running to close the metering gap in the country, including the National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP), the World Bank-funded Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP), Meter Asset Provider (MAP) Scheme, and the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI).

The Commission called for greater collaboration amongst the Distribution Companies (DisCos), Meter Providers, and other industry players to speed up meter installations. Adding that improved metering would ensure more accurate billing and help eliminate estimated billing.
NERC reiterated the need for a coordinated communication strategy to boost consumer awareness and participation.

Key participants at the meeting included, the World Bank, Meristem, NCC, NEMSA, DisCos, MAPs, among others.
