By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja

In continuation of the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s counter-terrorism operations, Troops of the 29 Task Force Brigade under Operation HADIN KAI successfully repelled a coordinated terrorist attack on their headquarters in Benisheikh, Borno State.

Disclosing this in a statement, the Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Michael Onoja, said the assault, which occurred at about 0030 hours (12:30 a.m.) on Thursday, 9 April 2026, saw insurgents attempting to breach the defensive perimeter of the military formation.

However, troops led by the Commander, 29 Brigade, Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, responded with exceptional courage, professionalism, and overwhelming firepower, decisively engaging the attackers and forcing them to retreat in disarray, abandoning their mission.

Onoja averred that the failed attack highlights the growing desperation of terrorist elements following sustained losses from recent military offensives, adding that it also underscores the high level of combat readiness, resilience, and operational effectiveness of Operation HADIN KAI troops in securing critical assets and maintaining pressure on insurgents across the North-East.

Regrettably, a number of brave soldiers paid the supreme price during the encounter.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, pays tribute to their heroism, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to the defence of the nation.

Their courage remains a lasting source of pride and inspiration to the Armed Forces and the country at large. The High Command extends its deepest condolences to their families and loved ones.

The DHQ, in keeping with military tradition, urged the public and media to allow the Armed Forces formally notify next of kin before further details are released. It also advised citizens to disregard misinformation, sensational reports, and unverified content circulating on social media, as such narratives undermine ongoing operations and national security efforts.

The Armed Forces of Nigeria, in collaboration with other security agencies and stakeholders, said it remains resolute in the fight against terrorism and insurgency, even as clearance and exploitation operations are ongoing to track and neutralize fleeing insurgents and prevent any regrouping.

The Chief of Defence Staff commended the troops for their bravery, discipline, and steadfastness, noting that their sacrifices continue to safeguard Nigeria’s sovereignty.
