NiMet Unveils Innovation Committee To Accelerate Digital Transformation, Research

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has inaugurated a Service Innovation Committee to deepen digital transformation, strengthen research and development, and improve service delivery across the agency.
The committee, which was inaugurated on Wednesday in Abuja, is expected to drive innovation initiatives in line with the Government’s public service reform agenda and directives from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, aimed at promoting innovation within public institutions.
Speaking during the inauguration, the Director-General of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, described innovation as a central pillar of the agency’s current administration.
He stressed that scientific institutions must continually translate research findings and discoveries into practical solutions that create value for society.
According to Anosike, NiMet has recorded significant progress in modernising its operations since he assumed office, citing improvements in weather and climate service delivery, stronger stakeholder engagement, enhanced staff capacity, expanded partnerships, and increased deployment of digital technologies to boost operational efficiency and decision-making.
He said the agency’s innovation-driven approach has strengthened organisational performance and created an enabling environment for new ideas and technological advancement.
“The establishment of this Committee therefore formalizes our commitment to innovation and continuous improvement,” Anosike stated.
The Director-General explained that the committee would serve as a catalyst for scientific breakthroughs by identifying innovative climate-smart practices, supporting research and development activities, and providing evidence-based recommendations to advance the agency’s strategic objectives.
He added that the body would also advise management on innovation-related matters and monitor the implementation of innovation projects across the agency.
