The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has denied claims by the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDP) that its T11 transformer at the Lekki Transmission Substation tripped unexpectedly and was awaiting inspection, insisting the actual fault originated from EKEDP’s own feeders.
In a statement issued by its management on Thursday, TCN said the incident occurred at 4:34am on 26th August, 2026, when EKEDP’s Oniru 33kV and Agungi 33kV feeders simultaneously tripped due to overcurrent and an earth fault.
According to TCN, the fault led to the inter-tripping of its TR1 60MVA 132/33kV transformer’s primary and secondary breakers, an event accompanied by a heavy bang and smoke at the substation.
The company said its maintenance crew responded promptly, rehabilitating the damaged secondary breaker and restoring both primary and secondary breakers later the same day.
It added, however, that a subsequent trial closure of EKEDP’s Oniru feeder triggered the same relay indications, resulting in another trip that required further corrective work.
TCN listed key clarifications on the incident, stating that no outage occurred on its T11 transformer as alleged by EKEDP, and that the fault was strictly linked to EKEDP’s Oniru and Agungi 33kV feeders.
It said its technical team had remained on-site, working to restore supply within the shortest possible time.
The company assured electricity customers affected by the incident that it was actively addressing the fault caused by the disco’s feeders and regretted any inconvenience caused, while reaffirming its commitment to building a more robust transmission network.
