Peter Obi Raises Fresh Questions Over Tinubu’s Undisclosed Educational Records

By Sunday Etuka

Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi has renewed calls for transparency from President Bola Tinubu regarding his educational history, describing as embarrassing reports that the presidency sought to have a foreign court withhold records tied to the matter.

Obi, who is the 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), said he had spent his Sunday praying for the nation and for those in leadership, but expressed deep concern over the country’s current trajectory.

In a post on his X handle on Monday, he noted that as a Nigerian who has never sought foreign citizenship, his loyalty to the country and belief in its future remain firm.

Obi argued that true leadership requires the courage to confront one’s history openly, acknowledging that authority is strengthened, not weakened, when leaders take responsibility rather than shield uncomfortable details from scrutiny.

He said this principle applies especially to questions surrounding educational credentials, stressing that issues involving primary and secondary schooling should be resolved through clear, verifiable explanations rather than legal proceedings.

He expressed particular concern about the example being set for Nigeria’s more than 200 million citizens, especially the over 30 million young people currently in school, saying the presidency should embody integrity, accountability and ethical leadership.

Acknowledging that an imperfect past is part of the human condition, Obi said what matters most is a willingness to address it with honesty and humility, and, where necessary, to prioritise the nation’s interest over personal ambition.

He further questioned when Nigeria’s political class would recognise that individual ambitions are fleeting while the nation endures, adding that the Presidency is a temporary office whose occupants nonetheless set moral standards with lasting impact.

He concluded that Nigeria remains greater than any individual, and that the integrity of the Republic must always take precedence over personal interest.
