NEDL Restores Power Supply To Gwada, Erena After Stakeholder Intervention

By Sunday Etuka

Niger Electricity Distribution Limited (NEDL) has announced reconnection of Shiroro Gwada and Shiroro Erena feeders following successful stakeholder engagement facilitated by the Deputy Governor of Niger State.

In a public notice issued on Thursday, the company said reconnection follows the conclusion of discussions and development of a strategic framework aimed at improving electricity service delivery, strengthening stakeholder cooperation and establishing sustainable payment arrangements going forward.

NEDL appreciated the intervention of the Deputy Governor and commended all stakeholders for cooperation, constructive engagement and commitment towards resolution.

The company said it remains committed to working collaboratively with stakeholders and communities to promote sustainable electricity services and improve customer experience.

Reconnection comes days after the company disconnected 132 kV Shiroro Transmission Station 33 kV Gwada Feeder and 132 kV Shiroro Transmission Station 33 kV Erena Feeder on Saturday over persistent accumulation of outstanding electricity bills.

Management had said action followed widespread non-payment by customers served by affected feeders despite repeated engagements and interventions, adding that disconnection notices were issued in July 2026.

The company clarified that proximity to power generation facilities or residence in host communities does not exempt customers from paying for electricity consumed, noting that belief by some consumers in affected communities that their status as host to Shiroro Hydroelectric Power Station exempts them from payment is incorrect.

It said persistent non-payment undermines financial sustainability of distribution and limits ability to maintain and improve service delivery, making continued operation of affected feeders commercially unsustainable.

NEDL had said it proceeded with disconnection in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements and established industry procedures after exhausting avenues for engagement, sensitisation, payment recovery and amicable resolution.

It urged affected customers to settle outstanding bills and contact customer service channels to regularise accounts and confirm requirements for restoration.

It also appealed to community leaders, traditional institutions, stakeholders and law enforcement agencies to support efforts to promote payment compliance and protect electricity infrastructure.
