
The total number of Nigerian nationals evacuated from South Africa, due to the ongoing xenophobic protests is now 1,141.
Spokesperson to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.
Ebienfa gave the update as the 4th evacuation flight from South Africa operated by Air Peace arrived the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Lagos with 282 returnees on Thursday.
“Total number of Nigerian nationals evacuated from South Africa, due to the ongoing xenophobic protests is now 1,141.
“The fifth and final evacuation flight will arrive Nigeria next week”, the statement concluded.
South Africa is currently experiencing a severe wave of xenophobic unrest. Anti-migrant vigilante groups have targeted foreign nationals, leading to deadly violence and mass displacement.
The crisis has prompted several African nations including Nigeria, Ghana, and Mozambique to launch emergency evacuations for tens of thousands of their citizens.
