The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport into a major aviation gateway for Northern Nigeria, unveiling a fully upgraded domestic terminal and approving ₦46 billion for the rehabilitation of the airport’s runways.
The announcement was made on Tuesday during the commissioning of the remodelled domestic terminal by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.
He said the projects form part of the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda to modernise critical aviation infrastructure.
Keyamo disclosed that work on the airport’s primary and secondary runways would begin in earnest, with about 60 per cent of the contract value already released to the contractor.
“Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport is a strategic aviation and commercial hub for Northern Nigeria. The Federal Government has approved ₦46 billion for the rehabilitation of its primary and secondary runways, and about 60 per cent of the contract sum has already been released,” he said.
He added that sustained investment in airport infrastructure would create a more efficient, competitive and globally connected aviation sector.
The newly commissioned terminal features upgraded baggage handling systems, improved check-in counters, modern passenger lounges, enhanced air-conditioning systems and refurbished terminal interiors aimed at improving operational efficiency and passenger comfort.
Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, said the project reflects the Authority’s resolve to deliver airport facilities that meet global standards.
“This project is another significant step in FAAN’s commitment to transforming airport infrastructure and elevating passenger experience across Nigeria,” she said.
Kuku noted that the upgraded Dankabo Domestic Terminal would strengthen Kano’s position as Northern Nigeria’s commercial gateway while placing the airport on par with the country’s leading terminals.
Chairman of the FAAN Board, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, described the project as a testament to the Federal Government’s infrastructure renewal drive.
“This project demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to infrastructure renewal under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and reflects the dedication of the Ministry of Aviation and FAAN to strengthening the aviation sector,” Ganduje said.
Following the inauguration, Keyamo led government officials, lawmakers, aviation stakeholders, traditional rulers and airline operators on an inspection tour of the upgraded facility.
Guests at the event praised the quality of the renovation, describing the terminal as a modern passenger facility capable of meeting international standards.
