
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has alerted residents of the Federal Capital Territory ( FCT) and 18 other states of impending heat stress.
NiMet in the heat stress warning issued on on Tuesday said the most affected areas are north-central and eastern states; Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Cross River, and FCT.
Other vulnerable regions are the southwest, coastal areas, Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Sokoto.
The agency said the rising temperatures and high humidity levels over the next three to four days may cause thermal discomfort.
The potential health impacts according to NiMet include fatigue and irritability, reduced cognitive function and motor skills and low productivity.
To mitigate the effects of heat stress,the agency advised Nigerians to “Use cooling devices such as fans and air conditioners to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.Wear lightweight, breathable fabrics that allow proper air circulation. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated.
“Minimize time spent outdoors, especially under direct sunlight. Seek shaded areas and take regular breaks if working outside.
“Refrain from prolonged exposure to the sun between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM, when temperatures are at their highest, Wear a wide-brimmed hat or cap and sunglasses to shield the face and eyes from direct sunlight,” the agency advised.
