Marwa Launches Historic Weapons Handling Training For NDLEA Officers

By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has formally inducted AK-47 rifles and advanced pistols into its operational arsenal in a major shift aimed at strengthening its capacity to combat increasingly violent drug cartels.

Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the agency, Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), announced the development on Monday during the inauguration of a specialised Train-the-Trainer Course on Weapon Handling at the NDLEA Academy in Jos, Plateau State.

Marwa, represented by his Chief of Staff, Col. Murtala Aminu, said the move marks a significant milestone in the agency’s 36-year history, noting that drug trafficking organisations have evolved into armed and highly organised criminal networks, making it imperative for NDLEA operatives to be adequately equipped and trained.

He disclosed that the arms procurement process, which began in 2023 through the China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO), has reached its final stage, with thousands of firearms and rounds of ammunition expected to be delivered soon. He added that the agency has already approved a distribution and accountability framework and is partnering with the Nigerian Air Force to airlift the weapons to commands across the country.

According to Marwa, the ongoing training is designed to produce pioneer master trainers who will return to their respective commands to conduct a mandatory one-month firearms training programme for all personnel before the weapons are deployed for operations.

He urged the participants to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, safety and accountability, stressing that firearms handling is a grave responsibility that must be guided by restraint, sound judgment and strict adherence to the rule of law.

Marwa expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for supporting the agency’s operational expansion and also commended the Office of the National Security Adviser for facilitating the initial procurement of the weapons.

The NDLEA boss said the induction of tactical arms represents a new chapter in the agency’s evolution into a more professional and formidable force against drug trafficking, expressing confidence that the enhanced capability would further strengthen national security and protect officers engaged in high-risk operations.
