The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has commenced a four-day capacity-building programme for the Gombe State Electricity Regulatory Commission (GOSERC) to enhance its regulatory capacity.
According to NERC, the training was also intended to support the effective implementation of electricity market reforms at the state level.
The Commission in a statement on Wednesday, quoted the NERC Chairman, Dr. Musiliu Oseni, to have expressed confidence in the state regulator’s ability to deliver on its mandate.
Oseni, while welcoming the GOSERC delegation, noted that GOSERC has experienced professionals and that it was well positioned to build a robust electricity regulatory framework for Gombe State.
Also speaking, NERC Commissioner, Stakeholder Management, Aisha Mahmud, noted that NERC has developed a wide range of regulatory instruments, frameworks and guidelines which GOSERC can leverage to establish a strong and effective regulatory regime in the state.
Responding on behalf of GOSERC, the Chairman, Dr. Usman Abba-Arabi, appreciated NERC for the initiative and pledged the Commission’s commitment to working closely with NERC to ensure seamless electricity regulation at the state level.
The statement said the capacity-building programme features technical sessions on: Navigating regulatory powers and jurisdiction under the Electricity Act 2023, The importance of timely and accurate regulatory reporting in achieving regulatory excellence, and Key regulatory issues in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
The workshop forms part of NERC’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the capacity of State Electricity Regulatory Commissions (SERCs) and promote a coordinated, efficient and sustainable electricity regulatory environment across Nigeria.
