The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), has issued a public alert following the escape of an inmate from custody in Yobe State.
In a statement released by the Yobe State Command on Wednesday, and signed by its spokesperson, Abdullahi Adamu, the Service disclosed that the incident occurred on the morning of April 13, 2026, when a vehicle transporting inmates from the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) Potiskum to Damaturu was involved in a road accident, creating an opportunity for one of the prisoners to flee.
The escaped inmate has been identified as Dahiru Mohammed, a 30-year-old convicted prisoner with prison number J/1539/24, who was admitted on November 29, 2024, under case number YBS/DT/HC/27/24. He hails from Askiwari village via Tarmuwa and was last seen along the Potiskum–Damaturu road.
Authorities have described the fugitive as dangerous and warned members of the public against attempting to apprehend him. Instead, citizens are urged to report any sighting or relevant information to the nearest police station or correctional facility.
The Correctional Service also called on residents, especially those within the Potiskum–Damaturu axis, to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements, noting that swift public cooperation is critical to re-arresting the escapee.
Officials further cautioned that harbouring a fugitive is a serious criminal offence punishable under the law, reaffirming their commitment to ensuring the inmate is returned to custody without delay.
