Why I Shutdown Onitsha Main Market -Soludo

By Sunday Etuka

The Executive Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Soludo, has explained that he ordered the shutdown of the Onitsha Main Market for one week due to the protracted economic sabotage cloaked as “Monday sit-at-home”.

In a post on his X handle on Monday, Governor Soludo declared that that ongoing forward, the order would apply to any other market in Anambra that shuts down on Monday.

TheFact Daily reports that the “sit-at-home” was declared in the south-east of Nigeria on August 9, 2021 by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to demand for the release of its leader, Nnamdi Karu and advocate for Biafran Independence, now sentenced to Life Imprisonment.

Despite the group claiming to have called it off, some faceless individuals are still running with it every Monday, paralysing economic activities, and forcing school closures in the region.

However, Governor Soludo declared that no individual or group has the right to halt the lives and livelihood of the people.

Therefore, urged all traders and market stakeholders to disregard this call to economic sabotage and resume business as usual. Adding: “Let us work together to build a prosperous Anambra.”

“To those who continue to aid and abet this economic sabotage, I warn that we will not tolerate it any further,” he declared.

Soludo said the government would take all necessary measures to ensure the security and safety of lives and property in the state. Therefore, called on all residents of Anambra to go about their normal business activities without fear.

“We will continue to do everything possible to protect our economy and ensure that our state remains a hub for business and investment. Let us stand together against economic sabotage and build a brighter future for our state. May Anambra continue to win!,” he said.
