The Federal Republic of Nigeria and the United Mexican States are commemorating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between them.
Spokesperson to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.
Established on April 14, 1976, Nigeria-Mexico relations have, over the past five decades, evolved into a stable and mutually beneficial partnership founded on respect for sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, and shared commitment to international peace and development.
Ebienfa noted that both countries have sustained cordial engagement at bilateral and multilateral levels, including within the United Nations system, where they have consistently aligned on key global issues.
Furthermore, bilateral cooperation had progressively expanded across priority sectors such as trade and investment, energy, agriculture, education, culture, and technical exchange.
“In recent years, renewed emphasis has been placed on enhancing economic diplomacy through increased private sector participation, diversification of trade, and exploration of opportunities in emerging areas, including renewable energy and industrial development.
“The Government of Nigeria notes with satisfaction the steady growth in engagement between both countries and acknowledged the vital role of diplomatic dialogue, institutional cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges in consolidating this partnership. These interactions continue to reflect the shared aspirations of both nations for inclusive growth, sustainable development, and enhanced South-South cooperation”, he said.
As Nigeria and Mexico mark this golden jubilee, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to further deepening bilateral relations through high-level engagements, strengthened institutional frameworks, and strategic cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
“The Ministry congratulates the Governments and peoples of Nigeria and Mexico on this historic milestone and expresses confidence that the next phase of the relationship will yield even greater dividends for both countries”, the statement concluded.
