The Nasarawa State Police Command has intercepted 174 rounds of live AK-47 ammunition and arrested a suspect in what authorities described as a major breakthrough in the fight against illegal arms trafficking and violent crime in the state.

The Command disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, saying the ammunition was recovered during a routine patrol operation along the Toto–Abaji Road.

According to the statement, operatives attached to the Toto Division arrested one Abubakar Abdullahi on June 22, 2026, after a search uncovered 174 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition concealed in his possession.

Police said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect could not provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the source, ownership, or intended destination of the ammunition.

The suspect is currently in custody, while investigators are working to unravel the network behind the illegal movement of the ammunition and apprehend other individuals linked to the crime.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to tackling criminality, particularly the proliferation of illegal arms and ammunition, which he described as a major driver of insecurity and violent crime.

“There will be no safe haven for criminals in Nasarawa State. We are determined to identify, track, and bring every offender to justice,” the commissioner said.

Mohammed noted that the Command had intensified intelligence-led policing, surveillance operations, and strategic deployments across the state to deny criminals operating space.

He also assured residents of the police’s readiness to protect lives and property, urging members of the public to remain vigilant and support security agencies with timely and credible information.

The Command reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on crime and pledged to continue deploying all lawful means to ensure the safety and security of residents across the state.
