Obi Challenges Tinubu To Account For ₦15.8Trn Subsidy Savings

By Sunday Etuka

Former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on President Bola Tinubu to explain how his administration has spent the ₦15.8 trillion saved from fuel subsidy removal, alongside more than $100 billion in borrowing and rising revenues from taxation.

In a statement posted on his X handle on Saturday, Obi noted that Tinubu recently spent a night in Akwa Ibom, a state outside Lagos and Abuja, and said he hoped the visit would encourage the president to tour the other 33 states.

Obi said the hospitality and food of Akwa Ibom must surely compare well with the foreign destinations where the president has spent over 260 days since taking office.

He urged the president to use such visits to speak directly to citizens about what has been done with public resources, including the extra revenues his administration celebrated last year for surpassing its target.

Obi said Nigerians deserve to know how many people have been lifted out of poverty, how many out-of-school children have returned to classrooms, and how many functional primary healthcare centres have been built.

He also asked how much electricity supply has improved, recalling Tinubu’s pledge that Nigerians should not vote for him if he failed to fix power.

On security, he asked for an explanation of how the country has been made safer, noting that Nigeria still ranks among the most terrorised nations in the world.

“Nigerians deserve answers,” Obi said, insisting they have a right to know what has been done with the resources entrusted to the government.

He added that the New Nigeria he envisions would be built on accountability, transparency, and the measurable impact of public resources on citizens’ lives.
