The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has warned personnel of the Command against unprofessional conduct, insisting on respect for human rights and policing with a human face.
Giwa gave the warning on Wednesday during an interactive Town Hall Meeting with security stakeholders and residents under the Oji-River Area Command, covering divisions in Ezeagu, Oji-River and Udi Local Government Areas.
Responding to complaints and observations raised by participants, the police commissioner stressed that operatives on stop-and-search duties must not intimidate or harass citizens or search phones without investigative justification.
He also disclosed that disciplinary actions were ongoing against erring officers, adding that the Command under his leadership would continue to enforce ethical and professional standards in line with the principles of the Nigeria Police Force.
The CP further assured residents that efforts were being intensified to address security concerns across the affected communities and urged members of the public to support the police with timely and credible information.
According to him, sustained cooperation between the police and the public remains critical to effective policing and building trust within communities.
The meeting, held at Wembley Hotel in Oji-River, was attended by traditional and religious leaders, Presidents-General, market and transport union representatives, youth and women leaders, as well as members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Oji-River branch.
Representatives of other security agencies, Forest Guards, Neighbourhood Watch groups, the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), and other stakeholders were also present.
Participants commended the commissioner for his proactive policing approach and the initiative to engage directly with citizens through the town hall meetings.
The exercise, which has already been held in Udenu and Nsukka Area Commands, is expected to continue in Agbani and later conclude in the Enugu Metropolis Area Command.
